It was a busy week in the Hyman house last week, with middle school soccer games and rock 'n' roll gigs all over town for my kids. I'm happy to report that Donovan led his team to a hard-fought 3-3 tie in his first-ever sports event of any kind (which he followed up with a 13-0 romp). Okay, led might be a tad strong. He played, and that’s all that matters.

WIRTW #596: the “Waterloo" edition
It was a busy week in the Hyman house last week, with middle school soccer games and rock 'n' roll gigs all over town for my kids. I'm happy to report that Donovan led his team to a hard-fought 3-3 tie in his first-ever sports event of any kind (which he followed up with a 13-0 romp). Okay, led might be a tad strong. He played, and that’s all that matters.
As for Norah, she played not one, not two, not three, but four gigs in six days, with the first three all happening within 24 hours of each other. I love watching Norah perform any time she's on stage, but her set at the Waterloo Arts Fest might be my favorite that she's ever played because it was 40 minutes of all original songs. To do that at 15 years old is pretty impressive, at least in this proud dad's opinion. Here's the best nine minutes from her set (the best because I actually think they are her three strongest songs), captured and posted by someone who wandered through.

Biden Administration announces $15 minimum wage for all federal contractors
Yesterday, the White House announced that effective January 30, 2022, all federal contractors will be required to incorporate a $15 minimum wage in new contract solicitations, and by March 30, 2022, all federal agencies will need to implement the minimum wage into new contracts and into existing contracts with annual options to renew.
The Executive Order that implements these changes will also tie this new minimum wage to inflation and adjust accordingly annually, eliminate the tipped minimum wage for federal contractors by 2024, and extends the required $15 minimum wage to federal contract workers with disabilities.

Government sanctioned discrimination is abhorrent and we, as a nation, should be ashamed

Yesterday, the Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance
Programs, the federal agency that regulates and governs federal contractors and subcontractors, proposed regulations to clarify the scope and application of the religious
exemption contained in section 204(c) of Executive Order 11246.

Compliance-by-carrot trumps compliance-by-stick
Democratic administrations are about enforcement.
Republican administrations are about education.
The endgame is still enforcement, but each side approaches this goal very differently.
This dichotomy might be an oversimplification, but, in at least in contrasting the Obama Administration to the Trump Administration, it is very true.

New OFCCP director inherits a criticized agency
If you are a federal contractor or subcontractor, the letters O-F-C-C-P hold real meaning for you. They stand for Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs. It is the federal agency which ensures that employers doing business with the federal government (i.e., those holding federal contracts and subcontracts) comply with federal laws and regulations requiring nondiscrimination in employment, including their affirmative action obligations.
Yesterday, the OFCCP named Ondray T. Harris as its new Director.
